From the Dawn archive - barges on moorings - can anyone identify this picture?
A bucket of bitumen and horse dung - traditionally used to laminate the bottom planks. It stands on a section of the old keelson or inside keel - in barges the keel is on the inside so that the bottom is completely flat. 
New iner whale and chine keelson (the side structure) - the whole structure of the barge being replaced from the inside. 2005. You can also see the refurbished original iron deck beams and the space ready for the new keelson up the centre inside.
